Stallion Semen Collection
In order to artificially inseminate a mare a stallion needs to be collected. A clean, safe environment is necessary. The stallion needs to be trained on, how to serve an artificial vagina.
Semen Evaluations:
In the lab the semen is then prepared for shipment or on sight insemination. Raw semen has to be looked at under the microscope in order to determine the motility of the semen. Then depending on the amount of mares the stallion has to breed with that ejaculate, the semen has to be extended. The ration of extender to semen is then dependant on the motility and concentration of the whole ejaculate. A way the semen is tested for longevity for shipment is by extending a dose of semen and leaving it in an equitainer for as long as it takes to see how long it takes for the semen to die down to 50% or less.
Shipping Semen:
After the semen has been extended the amount sent in the day shipper or equitainer is usually 2 syringes of 20-25ml. A stallion with good motility and good concentration will have a better chance of conception over 24 hrs, rather than a stallion with fair or poor semen quality.
Sheath Cleaning:
A stallion or gelding should have his sheath cleaned at least once a year to prevent infection, irritation and development of a bean.
A bean is a "bean" like shape of hard matter that is collected around the glands of the penis. This bean can become very large and block off the urethra. If a horse is unable to urinate due to the "bean" this will cause a great deal of discomfort.
Vulva Cleaning:
A mare's vulva should be cleaned more frequently because of the heat cycles. A mare's vulva can collect manure, and hardened urine, which can contaminate the vagina and uterus for breeding. A clean sight for conception starts on the outside.
